To date, the Renewable Energy Initiative has designed and funded over 40 diverse projects that reduce our environmental footprint while providing invaluable hands-on laboratory experiences for the entire campus community.

Our projects are divided into key areas of impact: photovoltaics, wind energy, solar thermal systems, and energy efficiency retrofits. Explore our work below to see how student vision and dedicated investment are powering the future of App State.

  • Photovoltaics

The Renewable Energy Initiative's Photovoltaic projects, feature campus PV arrays and research facilities that advance student-led renewable energy innovation.

  • Solar Thermal

The Renewable Energy Initiative's solar thermal projects, include campus systems that deliver efficient hot water and support sustainability efforts.

  • Wind

Installed in 2009, the Broyhill Wind Turbine was at the time the largest turbine in NC.

  • Energy Efficency

Energy efficiency upgrades include LED retrofits and window films that reduce energy use, costs, and supports campus sustainability.

  • Miscellaneous Projects

Additional energy saving projects include green power purchases, a solar‑powered greenhouse, and efficient composting initiatives.
