In Spring 2022, 65 CFL fixtures were upgraded to LED fixtures, reducing consumption from 24,863 kWh annually to 4,604 kWh and saving more than $1500 in utility costs a year.

Belk Library LED Upgrades

In Spring 2023, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative supported facilities in their upgrades of Belk Library CFL fixtures to LED fixtures. The Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative contributed $60,000, which aided the installation and labor costs for the 1 st floor. This project has led to a combined savings of 538,000 kWh a year, representing $55k in avoided utility costs.

Police Parking LED Upgrades

In Fall 2017, 175 CFL fixtures were upgraded to LED fixtures, reducing energy consumption from 30,808 kWh annually to 17,379 kWh, saving $2,500 in utility costs a year.

McKinney Alumni Center Window Film

In Spring 2022, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative funded the installation of a Low-E film on the south facing windows of Alumni Hall. Low-E coating helps reduce heating and cooling costs by reducing the amount of heat transfer.

Rankin Science South Duct Sealing

Spring 2023, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative contributed $40,000 in a partnership with facilities to blow a sealant through the air ducts, effectively sealing any holes or damage and saving more than 148,500 kWh per year in HVAC costs.

In Spring 2022, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative funded the installation of a Low-E film on 145 windows, saving more than $56,500 per year by reducing heating and cooling costs through heat transfer reduction.

In Spring 2023, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative funded and partnered with physics professor Dr. Carla Ramsdell to create the SPICE (Sustainable, Physics-Inspired Culinary Education) Lab, a high-efficiency cooking lab in Garwood Hall.

Student Recreation Center Air Handler 3 Heating Coil and LED Upgrades

In Spring 2024, 1,254 CFL fixtures in the Student Recreation Center Outdoor Programming Offices and stairwells were upgraded to LED fixtures, reducing consumption from 59,531 kWh annually to 14,708 kWh, saving $2692 a year in utility costs. In Fall 2024, the Appalachian State Renewable Energy Initiative partnered with University Facilities to fund the procurement and installation of an air handler reheat coil. This project saves around 335.4 MMBTU annually.
